Timmy the Ant Goes to the Playground

Written & Illustrated by: Laurie Trotman

There are times when I start to daydream. Do you ever daydream? My name is Timmy and I am an ant. Unlike most ants, I am very curious. I am pretty small but I have a huge curiosity for the world around me. Do you? Have you ever wondered why the sky is blue; or why you are an ant? What? You aren’t an ant? Wow, now I’m even more curious to learn about creatures that are NOT like me.

Last week, when I was on my way to school, I had not finished my homework, so I tried to finish it while I was on the school-beetle. The school beetle is what we ride to school.

Timmy on School Beetle

I didn’t finish my homework because it rained a lot last night so we all had to help clean the tunnels in our colony. It is important to me to complete my homework because I enjoy learning new things at school. If we don’t complete our homework, then my teacher, Mr. Eaglebud, will not teach us something new until the next day.

So I was on the school beetle finishing my homework and when I finished, I looked up to get off the beetle and was surprised to find myself near a place that I had never seen before.

I jumped off the school beetle and asked the beetle where I was. It was rather loud there, so the beetle, Mr. Beetlelegs, said loudly, “I believe we are at something called a playground or park. It has been said that small people play here. Now I have to go, but I will be back by here later today if you need a ride home.” Then he just crawled away leaving me in this strange new place.

I suppose it was up to me to explore it on my own, which made me sad, scared, and happy at the same time. I was sad that I was going to miss school today and scared to be on my own in a strange place. Yet, since I’m very curious about things, I was also happy to start exploring. I looked around and saw a little person sitting nearby in the sand. “This might be a good place to start exploring,” I thought, “because I know a lot about sand.”

Timmy tipping his hat

I walked over to the sand and said, “Hello, my name is Timmy. What’s yours?”

The little person seemed startled at first because she didn’t know where I was speaking from. She then looked down, saw me with my hat and nice root backpack on, and her eyes grew extra large! It was like she had seen a ghost!

Girl with a doll

“Did you just talk?” she asked me.

I removed my hat and bowed towards her and said, “Yes ma’am. I said hello and told you that my name is Timmy. What’s your name?” I asked again.

Shyly she stuttered, “M-M-My name is Mae. I’ve never met an ant that could talk before.” She looked at me funny and asked, “How is it that you can talk?”

I didn’t know that ants didn’t talk. Maybe ants don’t usually talk to people, so I said, “I’ve always been able to talk, but I’ve never met a person before, so this is my first time talking to a person. I guess you are the lucky one to be the first to hear an ant talk!” I then stood up tall and asked her politely, “Miss Mae, will you show me around this place? I’ve never been to a place like this before.”

Mae was so excited that she jumped up and put her hand down for me to crawl up onto. She ran to the swings and explained that people sit on these and go back and forth, then higher and higher! She let me sit on the chains while she sat and pushed herself until we started getting higher.

Mae swinging

Then she put me on my own swing and pushed me very high! Mae started squealing with joy and loudly cried, “Isn’t this fun, Timmy?” I was excited but also very frightened because I’m so small. I thought I was going to fly off the swing.

Timmy swinging

Mae must have seen how afraid I was so she stopped the swing and helped me off and back onto her hand. “I’m sorry,” she said sweetly, “I didn’t know that would be so scary for an ant!”

She thought for a moment and then said, “Would you like to meet my sister?”

“You have a sister too?” I asked. “I have almost a thousand sisters. Do you have that many?”

Mae giggled and giggled; then said, “No silly, I only have one. Her name is Winter.” Mae carried me over to the slide and called out to her sister, “Winter, come down here, I want you to meet Timmy!”

Winter on a slide

All of the sudden, someone swooshed by us as they slid down the slide and then came running over to us. “Winter, this is my friend Timmy the ant!” Mae explained. Now, because I didn’t say anything right away, Winter just stared at me and then started to go back to the slide. Mae said, “Wait, Winter, don’t you want to talk with him?”

Winter seemed shy, or maybe she just thought that Mae was pretending that I could talk, so I removed my hat and bowed to Winter and said, “Good day Winter. It is a pleasure to meet you!”

Winter’s eyes lit up and asked if she could hold me. She asked me if I wanted to go down the slide with her. I was a bit frightened after the swing incident, but she convinced me that I would be okay. I sat on Winter’s shoulder while she climbed up a very high ladder and then she sat down at the top. I had never been so high up before. I wondered if I could see my home from there. Home? Oh my goodness, I had forgotten all about school, my home, and the school beetle!

“Winter, I just remembered that I need to go home soon. Can we go down the slide quickly?” I asked.

“Sure!” she said. “Hold on tightly. Here we go!” We slid around and around until we were finally on the ground! Whew! It was better than the swing, but still very scary for a tiny ant.

Round slide

“Winter, can you ask Mae to take me back to the place in the sand where we first met?” I asked. We had to look around for a while before we found Mae. Finally, we found her. She took me back to the sand and set me down gently. “Are you coming back here tomorrow?” Mae asked me.

“Well,” I replied, “I got here by accident today. I was supposed to be in school but I missed the stop on the school beetle.”

“What’s a school beetle?” Mae and Winter asked in unison.

“Well, it’s like a school bus that people take to school, but we ride on beetles, so they are called school beetles!” I answered. Just then, I saw my school-beetle, Mr. Beetlelegs, crawling nearby so I said goodbye to Mae and Winter, ran over, and climbed up onto the beetle.

Timmy on School Beetle

Mae and Winter waved goodbye to me. It seemed like an awfully long ride home today, but perhaps it was because it was so far past my school.

When I got home, I had to explain to Queen Sally why I was late and why I didn’t go to school today. I told her the truth and about my adventure with Mae and Winter at the playground. Queen Sally was rather upset, but mostly she had been worried about me being out on my own.

Queen Sally frowning

I apologized to Queen Sally and then went to do my chores before eating dinner and going to bed.

Ant moving sand

Playing with children was exhausting, but also very fun. I hope that I get to meet Mae, Winter, and other children again soon!

Timmy goes to School

Written & Illustrated by: Laurie Trotman

Have you ever thought about things around you and yet you didn’t know where to go to get your questions answered? My name is Timmy, actually, it is Timmy Anthrox, but everyone just calls me Timmy. I’m an ant that lives in a colony of a thousand sisters and brothers, as well as almost five thousand uncles and aunts! We all live under the current queen, who happens to be my mother, Queen Sally! Isn’t she beautiful?

Queen Sally smiling

Our colony lives underground and we build tunnels day and night. New tunnels are built so that all of my aunts can go outside to collect food to feed us. A lot of my uncles are called ‘drones’ and they relate closely to Queen Sally. I’m told that this is why I have so many brothers and sisters, but I don’t know what that means exactly. Our colony is always growing.

Anthill

My sisters get to go outside with my aunts and I usually have to stay inside and work in the tunnels moving sand.

This makes me sad because I am very curious about what is outside of the anthill. I’ve only been outside twice in my life. Once, when my Uncle Jack took me to a ‘picnic,’ and once last week when I met Tom the snail. These two adventures made me even more curious. Thankfully, my mother, Queen Sally, arranged for me to go to school so that I could learn.

Ants eating leaves

Today was my first day of school. Aunt Pickles, who’s my favorite aunt, fixed me a lunch of strawberry sap and fly eggs. The other ants got to eat only leaves.

Auntie Bluebell was another of my favorite aunts. She made me a backpack made out of tree roots and also found me a red hat! I felt like I was the luckiest ant in the world and was ready to learn as much as possible. I ran as fast as I could out of the tunnel and up the anthill. I saw a few of my cousins were already there waiting for our ride.

Timmy's adventure look

What do we ride, you may ask? Well, we ride on beetles. Many beetles are usually coming by our anthills in the mornings so we hitch a ride with them until we get close to our school.

My school beetle’s name is Mr. Beetlelegs. I climbed up on him and we were off to school. Our school is inside a hole in a big oak tree that is near to our colony anthill.

Timmy on School Beetle

I know that it is an oak tree because I learned that on my first day of school. I also learned that the brown stuff that we walked on to get to our classroom was called ‘bark.’ This confused me because we also learned about a creature called a dog that makes a sound called ‘bark!’

Timmy with Pencil

My teacher’s name was Mr. Eaglebud, and he was very smart. By the end of my first day of school, my head was spinning with all sorts of new information. It was exciting and made me even more curious to learn more, but Queen Sally told me that I had to take my time, study, and also help around the colony.

So after I did my homework, I did my chores and helped clean the tunnels. We ate dinner and then I went to bed. I slept very well that night, but I awoke early the next day, ready to go back to school to learn some more.

The Ant and the Pea

Written & Illustrated By: Laurie Trotman

Did you know that ants are very small, but when compared to other living things they are stronger than most and faster? It’s true!

My name is Timmy. I’m an ant and I am very curious. Most of my sisters, brothers, and cousins think I’m strange, but I just love adventures.

Timmy the Ant

I have peeked out of my colony a few times and was amazed to see this giant creature. I didn’t know what it was, but I wanted to know more about it.

The other day, I asked Queen Sally what it was.

Queen Sally

This is Queen Sally and she’s my mother. She told me that the creature was called a human and warned me to stay inside the anthill. She told me I had to learn a lot more before I could go outside the colony. Humans are good but also dangerous to ants sometimes. This made me even more curious, but I tried to be a good student and listen and learn.

I have thousands of sisters, brothers, and cousins. I also have a lot of aunts and uncles. They teach us many things like how to carry and move sand. To me, this is Very Boring!

I once heard one of my uncles talking about carrying something big and green. He called it a ‘PEA’ and it came from something he called a ‘PICNIC.’ Now, I had no idea what a ‘pea’ or a ‘picnic’ was but it sounded more interesting than sand! I asked my Uncle Jack if he would show me a ‘picnic’ someday. He told me that our colony was near to a park where humans come, sit on the ground, and bring human food which is a special treat for us.

Uncle Jack said, “The trick is being smart and brave before you visit one of these ‘picnics.’ There are a lot of yummy and amazing treats we have found. We like the fruit most, as it’s very sweet.

Since it was April, we had a lot of sand to move so that we could tunnel closer to the park where the humans would come in May, when the sun came out more. I was so excited and curious that I worked night and day. I convinced about 900 of my brothers to help us move the sand and make a tunnel to the ‘picnic’ area of the park. I was getting stronger every day.

I could just imagine what the other ants would say when they saw me come to the Queen Mother with a beautiful green ‘PEA’ on my back.

Happy Peas

One morning, Uncle Jack quietly told me that about 50 of his brothers were heading out to explore because he had gotten the scent of a ‘picnic’ the day before. I remembered smelling something new and different yesterday too, so I was very excited to see and maybe taste a ‘picnic.’ I still didn’t know what a ‘picnic’ was, so I thought it was a thing, not an experience that humans do.

We left the tunnel and followed each other closely, one after the other. I was right behind Uncle Jack, who was the leader today.

When we got up close, I was smelling things I had never smelled before. I saw things that I had never seen before too! Humans! Lots of them. They were all different sizes too.

I wanted to break away and explore but Uncle Jack was very firm when he said, “No! Stick by me and stay close by!” We waited for a long time. It seemed like hours before the humans started moving away from us.

We had been waiting nearby and now it was clear.

We marched up onto this checkered cloth. It felt strange but very soft on my feet. We headed toward the smell. Uncle Sam found something called a strawberry.

Uncle Jack ran up on something big, red and green. He called it a watermelon.

He let me taste it! Oh my goodness was it sweet? I could have stayed there forever but Uncle Jack knew that I wanted to find a ‘PEA’ to carry to the Queen Mother so he convinced me to leave the sweet watermelon to find one.

It was getting late and the humans were coming back soon.

I saw something else, but it wasn’t a Pea! Uncle Billy said it was called ‘Peanut Butter’ which is spread onto bread. It sounded yummy!

We searched and searched for a ‘PEA’ and didn’t find one for a long time. Uncle Ralph was carrying a seed from the watermelon. Uncle Billy had some bread crumbs that had peanut butter on them, boy was that yummy. Three other uncles were carrying a whole sandwich! I told you, ants are strong! They even let me ride on the sandwich

All of my uncles were carrying some crumbs and seeds but I wanted a ‘PEA!’ Finally we saw it! There was one next to a plate.

I started towards it in a flash, but suddenly I was thrown into the air! I didn’t know what happened.

I didn’t know where I was. I got the sense that something bad had happened but I couldn’t see anything. It was like I was in a dark place, but yet it was warm and still smelled like a ‘picnic.’ Where was I?

I started crawling slowly and then I heard Uncle Jack calling for me, so I followed his voice. I guess that the humans had come back and picked up the checked cloth where we were to shake us off. I found Uncle Jack and it was then that he told me that humans didn’t like to see ants at their ‘picnics.’ He said we needed to head back to our anthill now. I was scared but I was also angry because I didn’t get the ‘PEA!’

“It’s not fair,” I said. All the other ants got special treats but I missed out. I was following Uncle Jack again, but I started going slower because I was sad.

Just then, an amazing thing happened. I saw something big and green! It was round and I was certain that it had to be a ‘PEA!’ It was beautiful. Uncle Ralph said, “Well? Go get it and stop looking at it!” I wasted no time. I ran as fast as my legs would move; burrowed under this beautiful ‘PEA’ and used all my strength to lift it onto my back. It was heavy and big. All of the uncles protected me and guided me back to our anthill.

When we got to the hill, I had to wait for them all to dig a bigger opening to the colony because my ‘BEAUTIFUL PEA’ was too large to fit down the hole. Finally, I was able to carry the ‘PEA’ to the Queen Mother. I had never seen the look on Queen Sally’s face before. It was angry, happy, scared, and relieved, all at the same time.

I am NOT pleased!

She scolded me for going out with my uncles without asking her for permission. She was happy, though, that I had made it home safely.

Oh, and she LOVED the ‘PEA’ and couldn’t believe that I had carried it all by myself.
That night, we had a big party and enjoyed eating all the crumbs, seeds, and the ‘PEA!’
